10 Notable Qualities of Lima, Ohio

I have had the pleasure of calling Lima, Ohio since 2011. In that time I have come to learn that Lima, Ohio, is known for several notable things: 

1. Shawnee Nation: The region’s history is deeply connected to the Shawnee Nation, an indigenous group that once inhabited the area. 

2. Lima Locomotive Works: In the early 20th century, Lima was home to the Lima Locomotive Works, which produced steam locomotives for the rail industry, contributing significantly to the city’s industrial heritage. Lima's semi-pro baseball team is names after this part of Lima's history, the Lima Locos.

3. Oil and Natural Gas: Lima played a pivotal role in the early development of the oil and natural gas industry in the United States. It was known for its oil refineries and contributed to the country’s energy production. Much of the refined oil out of Lima's facility is used to supply airports with jet fuel!

4. Automotive Industry: Lima has had a presence in the automotive industry, particularly with the production of engines and components for various automakers. Ford is a large manufacturer creating parts for some of Ford's top vehicle models.

5. Veterans Memorial Civic Center: This cultural venue hosts concerts, events, and performances and is a prominent part of the city’s cultural scene. In addition to this the Pangle Pavilion is now open as of Fall 2023, accommodating outdoor events in Lima's Downtown.

6. Allen County Fair: The annual Allen County Fair attracts visitors from around the region with its agricultural exhibits, entertainment, and fairground rides. 

7. Diverse Higher-Education Options: Lima is home to several educational institutions, including Ohio State University at Lima, University of Northwestern Ohio and Rhodes State College. These three dynamic academic institutions offer prospective students tons of options for higher education. 

8. Arts and Culture: The city has a vibrant arts and cultural community with museums, galleries, and theaters, contributing to the local arts scene. Artspace Lima is one such group hosting events and culturing locals to our rich history in liberal arts.

9. Civic Engagement: Lima has a history of civic engagement and community involvement, with numerous organizations and initiatives focused on community development. West Ohio Community Action Partnership serves as a great resource for Lima natives connecting them with much needed resources. 

10. Economic Diversification: In recent years, Lima has focused on diversifying its economy beyond traditional industries, including investments in healthcare and technology sectors. These notable aspects combine to create the unique identity of Lima, Ohio, making it an interesting place with a rich history and evolving economy.
